Speakers

Carla Engelke, OD, FAAO, 

Dr. Engelke is a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry and completed her residency in Primary Care/Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS). After which, she joined SAVAHCS as an attending staff Optometrist where she founded and continues to administer the Traumatic Brain Injury Visual Rehabilitation Service. She currently holds the rank of Assistant Professor at the Southern California College of Optometry and is Board Certified in Medical Optometry by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry. Dr. Engelke became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 2006 and is a Past President of the Arizona Chapter of AAO. She is also a Past President of the Armed Forces Optometric Society. She has served as an inaugural member of the SAVAHCS Institutional Review Board and a past chair of the SAVAHCS research and Development Committee. In addition to lecturing at the Academy’s Annual Meeting, she has published several peer-reviewed articles.

Elizabeth Escobedo, OD, FAAO, FSLS

After completing her optometry degree at the Midwestern University, Arizona College of Optometry, Dr. Escobedo completed a cornea and contact lens residency at Northeastern State University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Arizona College of Optometry where she teaches in the contact lens curriculum and sees patients in clinic for specialty contact lenses, ocular prosthetics, and myopia control. She is also a certified MiSight and Paragon Vision CRT practitioner.

Matthew Roe, OD, FAAO, FCOVD

Dr. Roe is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Vision Therapy at Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry. He is the Course Developer of the college’s Sports Vision elective and serves as Course Director for courses in the methods curriculum and pediatrics curriculum. He precepts third– and fourth-year students in primary care and pediatric/vision therapy specialty clinics. His research interests include stroboscopic visual training, binocular vision, and pediatric eye care.

Simran Brar, OD, FAAO

Dr. Brar is an optometrist specializing in pediatric eye care. She provides pediatric optometric services in Phoenix, Arizona at ABC Children’s Eye Specialists. Dr. Brar is dedicated in providing exceptional optometric care for children of all ages. She has completed advanced training in the treatment and management of various pediatric ocular conditions including amblyopia, strabismus, and infant aphakia. Dr. Brar earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL. She then completed her residency training in pediatric optometry at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry

Renee Doss, OD, FAAO

Dr. Doss grew up in the San Francisco bay area and is a 2015 graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University. In 2016 she completed a residency in Ocular Disease and Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (SAVAHCS) in Tucson, AZ. Afterward, she worked at a private practice in Ukiah, CA practicing medical optometry and providing the only low vision services in the county. In 2017 she joined SAVAHCS as an attending staff optometrist and became a fellow in 2019. She recently accepted a faculty position at Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry. Dr. Doss is passionate about teaching and in her free time enjoys reading, practicing yoga, astronomy, and playing musical instruments.

Timothy Hug, OD, FAAO

Dr. Hug graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry, after which he served in the US Army for three years. Dr. Hug practiced at the Children’s Hospital in Kansas City for over 25 years, and joined the Phoenix Children’s Hospital in October 2020. He is the chief of optometric services and is the residency director for their pediatric optometry program. Dr. Hug is a clinical associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the Arizona Optometric Association. He provides CME lectures for regional and national optometric meetings, including the American Academy of Optometry.

 Brayden Lundquist, OD, FAAO, FSLS

Dr. Lundquist is a specialty contact lens fitter and primary care optometrist in Goodyear, Arizona. He graduated from Midwestern University Arizona college of Optometry in 2015 and subsequently completed residency in Cornea, Contact Lens and Refractive Surgery at Southern College of Optometry and Eye Specialty group in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Lundquist became a Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society in 2016 and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 2017. Dr. Lundquist’s interests include anterior segment disease with special emphasis on the therapeutic effects of specialty contact lenses in all their varieties. Dr. Lundquist is fascinated by the emerging advancements in specialty contact lens options for patients and enjoys working with specialty contact lens innovators in the areas of wavefront corrected scleral lenses and free-form scleral lens designs. Dr. Lundquist has written in peer reviewed journals and for industry publications on the topic of eye care and specialty contact lenses. When he is not caring for his patients, Dr. Lundquist enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 children, astrophotography, and riding OneWheels.

Course Handouts

Course Handouts will not be printed. An email with a Dropbox link to course handouts will be sent a few days prior to the meeting.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellation requests must be in writing (email is acceptable). Cancellation requests must be received by 09/06/22 to receive 100% refund of registration fee (less a $25 cancellation fee). No refunds will be issued 09/07/22 or later.
